Ink and casein on paper. 9 x 12 in.
During the month of full-time teaching, I'm constrained to a small format. Commuting plus working with children takes a lot of energy, so a paper where I can just sit and work is mostly all I can manage. Still, small doesn't necessarily mean easier. Some takes me weeks to understand the tricks carried and subtleties that emerged.
This work started with ink, and after some weeks, I added casein. The superposition and offsetting convey the time elapsed between layers, overlapping just enough, but not precisely. And the openness of it, floating as it seems through a foggy window is an invitation where I reflect how far I can grasp to intervene.
Thin, 2024. Ink on paper, 50 by 13.5 in.
At the end of a year that began with small-format quick paintings, I end up with large-format inks that took around a month each.
The natural return to ovals is refreshing while the questions remain and deepen. Am I the painter or are the ovals creating themselves the work? And if so, how well I am serving it.
